Case study: Sports enthusiast Jack helps young people reach their own goals
Jack Webb is living the dream – helping young people to reach their goals by using sport as a springboard to achievement.
As centre co-ordinator at Hype in Birkenhead, he’s passing on his passion for football – as well as an introduction to a life of fitness and health – to a generation of youngsters living in an area where opportunities are few.
Jack, who gained his Level 2 Business Administration qualification on a Progress to Excellence apprenticeship programme, said:
“Before joining Hype, I worked with children as a football coach as playing sports and keeping active has always been an important part of my life.
“My dad was my inspiration as he always believed in the decisions I made, no matter whether he thought they were right or wrong. He always tried to push me to achieve and become the best I could.
“Working at Hype is giving me a chance to encourage the kids here to keep fit and active and to be adventurous and try out new sports.”
Hype – Helping Young People Everywhere – runs a range of activities, events and workshops for young people aged 7 to 24 who live in neighbourhoods of Birkenhead where there are limited opportunities. Its aim is to improve their health, social and education skills as well as their confidence and self-worth and give them a sense of ownership and responsibility in the local community.
“An apprenticeship was the start of me getting my dream job, somewhere like Hype where, if I’d been able to come to a place like this when I was a kid, it would have kept me from hanging around the streets and given me the chance to try out new experiences.
“The job has given me a chance to see that, no matter where you come from, you can be an achiever.
“This is what I want to pass on to the young people who come to the Hype centre. I want them to see that you can work towards a qualification that will help you to get a job so you can, like me, live your dream.”
Jack’s new goal is to gain football coaching qualifications and to work abroad in holiday clubs.
