Ideal for professionals just starting out in the children and young people’s sector

This qualification has been designed to provide a broad understanding of the children and young people’s workforce sector and an introduction to the practical skills and knowledge required. The qualification will also provide an awareness of the range of jobs and work settings in the children and young people’s sector.

It will:

  • Enable learners to make an informed assessment of their own aptitude for work in this sector and to make informed decisions about careers
  • Encourage learners to reach a level of knowledge and skills that will facilitate progress into further vocational learning or to potential employment in the sector
  • Introduce learners to the discipline of the working environment and to encourage mature attitudes to the community in general

Who can do this course?

This qualification meets the needs of professionals who work or want to work in a wide range of children and young people’s settings covering the age range 0 – 19 years for example in the roles of:

  • Care worker
  • Childminder
  • Youth and community worker

Course duration and attendance

This apprenticeship lasts for 12 months. Over the length of your course, you will receive face to face visits from your assessor at your workplace. There will also be some self-study elements, however, your tutor will offer advice and guidance around this.

What you will study

Mandatory units include:

  • Contribute to the support of child and young people’s development
  • Contribute to children and young people’s Health and Safety
  • Contribute to the support of positive environments for children and young people
  • Understand partnership working in services for children and young people
  • Introduction to communication in health, social care or children and young people’s settings
  • Introduction to personal development in health, social care or children and young people’s settings.There are a wide range of optional units for these courses which you can view on the Skillsfirst website.

Functional Skills

This is a mandatory part of the course unless you already hold relevant Functional Skills/Key Skills qualifications or GCSE English and maths. Certificates must be provided for exemption from this part of the course. You will be asked to complete an initial assessment at induction to help us support you with this. You will then be assigned an assessor in this area to fully support you throughout this part of your course. You will be required to sit short examinations to complete Functional Skills.

Course costs

The cost of this course is £2,000 for levy paying employers, or £100 for co-investment employers. This apprenticeship is also offered as a standalone diploma on a commercial basis, and can also be funded via a student funded loan.
