Fitness trainer Nigel pulls no punches when it comes to beauty therapy massage
Former top boxer, Nigel Wilkes, is beating many others to the punch when it comes to fitness training at his new gym.
And his success, he believes, is due to his bold move to combine a lifetime’s knowledge and experience in boxing circles with brand new skills – in massage and beauty therapy.
Nigel, a fitness professional with more than 10 years’ experience within a fitness club environment and more than 30 years in boxing, enrolled on a beauty therapy massage course in order to further aid his career progression.
His achievement resulted in a huge leap in his plans to open a new gym in Stockport, where he now offers massage treatments to his members in the likes of body massage, Indian head massage, massage with pre-blended oils or stone therapy.
Nigel, a well-known popular face and top-ranker on the boxing circuit who once trained with world champion Ricky Hatton, explained: “I’d always had my heart set on having my own fitness centre, one that didn’t just offer standard gym exercises but one that was fun, friendly, inclusive and passionate about helping members achieve their goals by building self-belief and confidence.
“I’d known about the great benefits of massage after working out so I decided to incorporate this into my gym plans.
“I enrolled on the course with Progress to Excellence Ltd and I was the only man there. But I loved it and really took to it – it was very professional and run in a very calm setting.”
Four months on, Nigel’s Zestus Fitness Centre in The Ropeworks, Stockport, is really taking off, with members having one-to-one training with him or taking part in his exercise classes.
He added: “The treatment room where members can relax after working out and feel the benefit of a therapy massage is amazingly popular with everyone – men, women, young and old.
“The massage helps the body and muscles to relax a bit smoother. During strenuous exercise, the body accumulates lactic acid which contributes to muscle soreness – getting a massage assists this acid break-up and removes it from your muscles.”
On his course, Nigel also learned the art of the spray tan, another huge hit with members.
He added: “All in all, getting the qualification in beauty massage has been a great asset to the business. Feeling good and looking good are all part of what we want for our members on their journeys to a new lifestyle.”
Progress to Excellence Ltd offers NVQs, Diplomas and VRQs in hair and beauty. Most courses are funded through an Advanced Learner Loan which (subject to eligibility) is available to individuals aged 19 and over, who choose to study a level 3 to level 6 course. It’s easy to apply for an Advanced Learner Loan, and household income isn’t taken into account. There’s also no credit check or upper age limit.
Repayments won’t start until the individual is earning over £21,000 a year which makes it a great route for those looking to study a hair and beauty qualification. Once the repayment threshold has been reached, the learner only pays back 9p in every £1 of what’s earned above it.
