Kelly uses her apprenticeships in health and social care to progress up the ladder
Kelly Avery, Practice Leader with Havencare, has spent the last few years using apprenticeship training in the health and social care sector, to enhance her support of people with learning disabilities and autism in the South West of England.
After leaving school, Kelly took a job in the elderly care sector, then, to broaden her knowledge, started doing agency work.
She explained: “It was here that I really began to enjoy working among young people with learning disabilities – the challenges were immense but very rewarding. I gained my level 2 and level 3 health and social care qualifications and put everything I learned into practice, supporting people with extremely complex needs.”
Fast forward a few years and Kelly is now the one leading the team who are offering the support.
She said: “I’m not saying every day is easy, as I can sometimes be dealing with extremely challenging situations. But it’s the job I chose, its work that I love and it’s all about showing young people that they too can live life to the full.”
“During my career, I have always studied; this has allowed me to constantly up-skill and get more qualifications under my belt. I have not only gained experience on the job, but also acquired the knowledge to back it up. My most recent qualification, the Leadership and Management in Care Level 5, has also enabled me to step up the managerial ladder.
“The interactive and flexible way of study was really good for me. I would meet with my assessor on a monthly basis, so I knew I was supported and that they were there if I needed them, but it didn’t impact on me getting on with my job; I was able to do both. I’d recommend this method of study to anyone, as apprenticeships are for anyone and everyone, not just for those just starting out in their career.”
With a level 5 now under her belt, Kelly is looking to study a higher management qualification next.
She added: “However, I still have a lot to do at this level – but it’s something to plan for in the future.”
